What a disappointment.
It’s the first time I’ve stopped listening to an audio book. I probably would have stopped sooner (I listened to almost half) if it had been a library book –Libraries ROCK! Endless (endless!) detail, no end of calamities, I simply got bored.
I didn’t really read any reviews before choosing the book (as part of my birthday gift). Reviews are also spoilers and I enjoyed Amy Tan’s previous books. When I like an author it seems like a safe bet. The last book I read by Tan was “The Opposite of Fate” and I think I liked that one best of all.
Oh well.
Note: Yup! Am still reading “A Suitable Boy” by Vikram Seth!
Hi Naomi,
Thanks for the warning, ha ha! I’ve read some books by Amy Tan and they were ok.
Your epic reading of A Suitable Boy made me consider how I would cope with Shantaram which is the heaviest book I have ever held in my hands. However, it is hard to put down, and I am afraid that’ll be the way how I am going to spend my Christmas holidays.
If I had more time it would go faster but when the book is good IT IS WORTH IT!
What is Shantaram?
Naomi
Wow! I would never have expected it from a Tan book but there you are : )
Is the Seth book good so far?
Excellent! So good! It will take me forever to finish it but I’m not giving that one up!
Naomi, read Shantaram! It’s set in India, it’s very long and it’s a thoroughly good read. Haven’t read the Tan book, maybe I won’t then… 😉
Lizzie,
Recommendation noted (I have a list) though no way will I start another long book about India right after this one, LOL!
Other books by Tan are much better, skip this one!
Naomi
By all means, read Shantaram http://bibliojunkie.wordpress.com/2009/08/30/shantaram/, Naomi! It’s fascinating! I haven’t finished it yet but I already love it. The author’s personality adds to the uniqueness of the book! But it’s heavy, oh so heavy considering I read only in bed :)!
I have officially added the book to my list, Baiba! Its not available as an audiobook either… I’ll look for it!
